About Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in its present form has existed for only about 50 years. However, the origins of TCM go back much further: acupuncture and moxibustion were already used more than 3,000 years ago. These healing methods developed from Chinese folk medicine, which was strongly influenced by beliefs in spirits and demons. There is evidence that acupuncture was not limited to China. For example, examinations of the glacier mummy “Ötzi” suggest that he may have been treated with an early form of acupuncture around 5,000 years ago. Written sources on TCM have been known for more than 2,000 years. The oldest of these is the Huangdi Neijing, known in English as The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine.
These classical texts form the basis of all further TCM writings. The holistic approach of these ancient texts teaches us that human beings are part of a natural order. When we live in harmony with nature and with those around us, we remain healthy.
